Full profile →What is the difference between assisted living and memory care in Massachusetts?
Assisted living is a certified ALR apartment with meals and personal care; memory care is a secured Special Care Residence inside an ALR for people living with dementia. Both are certified by AGE, and neither is a nursing home.
| Assisted living (traditional ALR) | Memory care (Special Care Residence) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who certifies it | AGE certifies the residence as an Assisted Living Residence (ALR) | AGE certifies a Special Care Residence (SCR) inside an ALR |
| What it is | Private apartments with meals, personal care and medication help | A secured, dementia-focused residence with added staff training and programming |
| What it isn't | Not a nursing home — no 24-hour skilled nursing | Not a separate license — it's part of the ALR's certification |
| Who it fits | Adults who need help with daily activities but are largely independent | People with Alzheimer's or related dementia who need a secure setting |
| Typical MA fee (median low–high) | $4,228–$9,225/mo | $7,218–$10,886/mo |
| MassHealth | Does not pay rent; some residences take GAFC or SCO for care services | Same — rent is private pay; ask about GAFC/SCO for services |
Fee medians: AGE Assisted Living Residences Census Report 2025 (2024 data, statewide).
Frequently asked questions
Is assisted living licensed in Massachusetts?
No — Massachusetts certifies assisted living residences instead of licensing them. The Executive Office of Aging & Independence (formerly the Executive Office of Elder Affairs) certifies each ALR under M.G.L. c.19D and 651 CMR 12.00 and reviews it for recertification.
Who regulates nursing homes in Massachusetts?
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health licenses nursing homes, and CMS certifies them for Medicare and Medicaid; inspection results are published on Medicare Care Compare.
Do facilities pay to be listed?
No. Every certified residence and provider in the five counties is listed from public records, whether or not it works with us.
