143 certified Assisted Living Residences in Suffolk, Middlesex, Norfolk, Essex and Plymouth counties operate a Special Care Residence (SCR) — Massachusetts' certified setting for Alzheimer's and related dementia — according to the AGE list dated June 25, 2026. Together they report 3,941 Special Care units.

28 of them are dedicated memory care residences with no traditional units (for example Adelaide of Newton Centre, Artis Senior Living of Lexington, Artis Senior Living of Reading); the rest pair an SCR with traditional assisted living, which lets a resident move within the same community as needs change. Massachusetts has no separate memory care license and no tiered ALR certification levels — the SCR designation is what to verify.

How do you verify a Massachusetts assisted living residence?

Find the residence on AGE's assisted living locations list on mass.gov; its record page shows units, ownership flags and any posted Compliance Review Report. There is no certification number to search.

What does a Plan of Correction mean on a compliance review?

It means AGE cited one or more requirements during its recertification review and the residence must correct them in writing before final approval. It is the standard outcome, not a suspension; a modification, move-in restriction or suspension is more serious.

Does MassHealth pay for memory care in an assisted living residence?

No — MassHealth does not cover ALR rent or the Special Care fee. Some residences accept Group Adult Foster Care (GAFC) or a Senior Care Options (SCO) plan for personal-care services, and long-term MassHealth coverage of room and board is available only in a nursing home.
