What is the difference between assisted living and memory care in Massachusetts?

Assisted living is a certified ALR apartment with meals and personal care; memory care is a secured Special Care Residence inside an ALR for people living with dementia. Both are certified by AGE, and neither is a nursing home.

Frequently asked questions

Is assisted living licensed in Massachusetts?

No — Massachusetts certifies assisted living residences instead of licensing them. The Executive Office of Aging & Independence (formerly the Executive Office of Elder Affairs) certifies each ALR under M.G.L. c.19D and 651 CMR 12.00 and reviews it for recertification.

Who regulates nursing homes in Massachusetts?

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health licenses nursing homes, and CMS certifies them for Medicare and Medicaid; inspection results are published on Medicare Care Compare.

Do facilities pay to be listed?

No. Every certified residence and provider in the five counties is listed from public records, whether or not it works with us.
